To add a Facebook pixel to Shopify, install a pixel app such as OC Meta Pixel and paste your pixel ID, which also lets you run several pixels and server-side Conversions API events, or install Meta’s free Facebook & Instagram app, connect your Business account, and select your pixel there.
Either route takes about 10–15 minutes. This guide covers both, how to test that events fire, and the errors merchants hit most.

What you need first
- A Meta Business account with admin access to the ad account and the pixel (Meta now calls it a dataset in Events Manager).
- Your pixel or dataset ID. Find it in Events Manager. Our guide on where to find your Facebook pixel ID shows each click.
- A Conversions API access token if you use a pixel app with server-side tracking.
Create a pixel and access token in Events Manager
- In Events Manager, click Connect Data Sources, choose Web, then Get Started.
- Name the data set, choose Meta Pixel and Conversions API, and click Connect. Note the ID.
- To get a token, open the pixel, go to Settings, and under Conversions API click Generate Access Token.
- Copy the token and store it safely. Meta does not keep a copy for you.
More detail is in how to create a pixel access token.
Option 1: Use OC Meta Pixel for multiple pixels and Conversions API
OC Meta Pixel ‑ Facebook Pixels is made by our team, so weigh this section with that in mind. It has been on the App Store since 2021, holds a 4.9 rating from 96 reviews, and carries the Built for Shopify badge.
It lets you add several Facebook and TikTok pixels, target each one by whole store, product, collection or market, and send server-side Conversions API events that are deduplicated with browser events.
Steps
- Install OC Meta Pixel from the Shopify App Store.
- Add your pixel: paste your pixel (dataset) ID from Events Manager.
- Add the access token to turn on Conversions API (included on paid plans).
- Choose where it fires: the entire store, or specific products, collections or markets. Repeat for each extra pixel.
- Turn on spam and fake event blocking if you see junk purchases in reports (paid plans).
- Test with Events Manager’s Test Events tool and the Pixel Helper.
Price (checked October 14, 2026): a free Development plan; Basic $14.99 a month or $90 a year with unlimited pixels and Conversions API; Advanced $24.99 a month with dedicated support. Paid plans have a 7-day trial.
Honest note: among its few 1-star reviews, one from late 2025 reports tracking problems and slow support during Black Friday week; the developer replied that tracking was confirmed working and a refund was issued.
Option 2: Meta’s Facebook & Instagram app
The Facebook & Instagram app is built by Meta. It is free to install, has 5,758 reviews with a 3.8 rating, and includes a conversion pixel and product sync to your Facebook and Instagram shop (checked October 14, 2026).
- Install Facebook & Instagram from the Shopify App Store.
- Connect your Facebook account, Business account and ad account when asked.
- Select your existing pixel, or create a new one in the app.
- Choose a customer data-sharing level in the app’s settings. Higher levels share more event data with Meta, subject to your privacy settings.
- Finish setup and test events as shown below.
What merchants report: recent 1–2 star reviews (June–September 2026) mention a pixel error that took about two weeks of support to fix, setup creating a separate dataset that could not be merged with an existing business profile, and the app showing “connected” when it was not. If you already have a pixel with history, select it carefully rather than creating a new one.
Limit: the app is built around one pixel per store. Agencies or brands running several pixels, or separate pixels per market, often need more control.

What about pasting the code into theme.liquid?
Older guides tell you to paste the pixel base code into theme.liquid. That only covers theme pages, not checkout, and it is easy to double-count events if an app is also installed. Shopify’s current way to add custom tracking code is Settings > Customer events > Add custom pixel. Use it only if you are comfortable writing event code; an app is simpler for most stores.
How to test your Facebook pixel
- In Events Manager, open Test Events and enter your store URL.
- Browse a product, add it to cart and start checkout. You should see PageView, ViewContent, AddToCart and InitiateCheckout.
- Place a test order with a 100% discount code to check Purchase.
- Use the Meta Pixel Helper extension to check browser events on the storefront.
- If you send server events, check that each event shows as deduplicated, not counted twice.
Which events matter most
Meta optimizes ads on the events you send, so the core shopping events need to be clean:
- ViewContent when a product page loads.
- AddToCart when an item is added.
- InitiateCheckout when checkout starts.
- Purchase with the order value and currency.
If Purchase is missing or doubled, fix that first. Ads set to optimize for purchases learn from that event.
Common problems and fixes
Purchases counted twice
Usually two tools send the same pixel: Meta’s app plus another app, or theme code plus an app. Keep one source per pixel, and make sure browser and server events share an event ID.
Events missing after setup
Check that the pixel ID matches the one in your ad account and that customer privacy settings are not blocking tracking for your test visit.
A new dataset was created by mistake
Reviewers describe this with Meta’s app. During setup, pick the existing pixel from the list. If a second one was created, stop using it in ads and remove it from the store.
Junk or fake purchase events
Spam events can poison ad optimization. Use a tool that filters fake events, and check for test orders left in reports.
FAQ
Is the Facebook pixel free?
Yes. Creating a pixel in Meta is free. Meta’s Shopify app is free to install; some pixel apps charge for extra features.
Can I add more than one Facebook pixel to Shopify?
Yes, with an app that supports multiple pixels, such as OC Meta Pixel. Meta’s own app is built around one pixel.
Do I need the Conversions API?
It is recommended because browser events can be lost to ad blockers and iOS privacy settings. Server events fill some of that gap.
Where do I find my pixel ID?
In Meta Events Manager, under Data sources. It is a long number shown under the pixel name.
