A post-purchase upsell on Shopify is a one-time offer shown after the customer pays and before the Thank you page, and it needs an app because Shopify has no built-in post-purchase offer. You can use OC: Volume Discount Bundle App (ours) or another app that uses Shopify’s post-purchase extension, then selecting it under Settings > Checkout > Post-purchase page.
This guide covers which orders can see the offer, how to set it up, offer rules that keep it relevant, and fixes when the page never appears, using Shopify documentation and App Store listings checked on October 16, 2026.

What a post-purchase upsell is on Shopify
The post-purchase page sits between payment and the order confirmation. The order is already placed, so a “no thanks” never puts the first sale at risk. If the customer accepts, the item is added to the same order, usually without typing card details again, because the offer only shows when the card is already stored for the order.
It is different from a Thank you page offer, which appears after the confirmation and usually sends the shopper back to the store. Many apps support both: a one-click add-on first, then a discount code block on the Thank you page.
According to Shopify’s checkout apps guide, post-purchase apps work on the Basic plan and higher, not only on Shopify Plus, and you can use only one post-purchase app at a time.
Will the offer show on your orders? Check this first
This is the part most setup guides skip. Shopify does not show the post-purchase page on every order. The conditions below come from the Shopify.dev post-purchase product offers documentation. Compare them with how your customers actually pay before you spend time on offer design.
| Order situation | Post-purchase page? | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Paid by credit card through the Online Store channel | Yes, if the app’s rules match | This is the audience your offer reaches |
| Paid with a wallet (Apple Pay, Google Pay, Amazon Pay) or an installment service (Klarna, Affirm, Afterpay) | Skipped | Stores with heavy wallet or buy-now-pay-later use will see fewer offer views |
| First payment by gift card or any non-credit-card method | Skipped | Cash on delivery and bank transfer orders get no offer |
| Gateways that must keep the CVV, such as Braintree, Payflow Pro, PayPal Payments Pro or Eway | Not supported | Check your payment provider before choosing an app |
| Local delivery orders | Skipped | Use a Thank you page block for these customers instead |
| Orders with duties and multiple currencies, or under $0.50 | Skipped | Cross-border stores should expect gaps |
| Orders from other sales channels (for example POS or marketplaces) | Skipped | Only Online Store checkouts qualify |
Data checked October 16, 2026 against the Shopify.dev post-purchase limitations list. Shopify still labels post-purchase extensions as beta, and apps need Shopify’s approval to use them on live stores, so pick an app already listed for post-purchase and expect rules to change.
Two more limits shape your offer plan. A customer can accept at most three post-purchase offers per checkout, and each store has only one post-purchase page, so a “downsell” is a second step on the same page rather than a separate page.
Option 1: Add a post-purchase upsell with OC: Volume Discount Bundle App
OC: Volume Discount Bundle App (ours) has a 5.0 rating from 76 reviews and lists “Post Purchase & TYP Upsells” on both its Free plan (1 campaign) and its Plus plan ($7.99/month, 7-day free trial). TYP means Thank you page. It is mainly a bundle and quantity-break app, which suits stores that want bundles on the product page and a follow-up offer after payment from one app.
- Install the app from its Shopify App Store listing and open it from Apps in your admin.
- Create the post-purchase offer in the app. Open the More Upsell menu, pick the product and discount, and decide whether to exclude items the customer just bought. You can add a second upsell or a downsell if the first offer is declined. Start with one product that fits most orders, such as a refill, an accessory or a second unit.
- Select the app for the post-purchase page. Go to Settings > Checkout. Shopify shows the Post-purchase page section only after an app that supports it is configured. Select OC: Volume Discount Bundle App there and save.
- Add a Thank you page block (optional). In Settings > Checkout, open the checkout editor, switch to the Thank you page, add the app’s checkout-ui block from the Apps panel and save.
- Place a test order with a credit card (a test card works in test mode), not a wallet, so the post-purchase page can appear. Then confirm the item and discount were added to the order.
Not the best fit if you want a full funnel builder with AI product picks and long-term funnel reports. Dedicated post-purchase apps such as Zipify OCU cover that in more depth. OC does support one-click acceptance (the item is added to the order just paid), a second upsell and a downsell, but A/B testing is on the Plus plan only.
Option 2: Other post-purchase upsell apps
The big difference between these apps is billing: flat fee, store orders or upsell revenue.
| App | Rating | Reviews | Price | What the price is based on |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OC: Volume Discount Bundle App (ours) | 5.0 | 76 | Free (1 campaign); Plus $7.99/mo | Flat monthly fee |
| ReConvert post purchase upsell | 4.8 | 3,108 | Free up to 50 orders or $50 upsell revenue; $9.99–$39.99/mo | Store orders or upsell revenue |
| One Click Upsell ‑ Zipify OCU | 4.6 | 568 | $9.95, $25 or $149+/mo; 30-day trial | Monthly upsell revenue (max $999/mo) |
| PostSurge Post Purchase Upsell | No reviews yet | 0 | Free (50 views, 3% fee); $14.99–$49.99/mo | Offer views plus a revenue fee on lower plans |
Data checked October 16, 2026 on each app’s Shopify App Store listing. Aftersell Post Purchase Upsell, long a common pick, showed “not currently available on the Shopify App Store” on that date.
Where others are stronger: ReConvert has by far the most reviews and a dedicated Thank you page builder, and Zipify OCU includes built-in A/B testing and AI upsells for high-volume funnels. PostSurge launched in May 2026 and has no reviews yet.
What merchants complain about matters as much as features. In the 1- and 2-star reviews (checked October 16, 2026) on ReConvert’s listing, the most common theme on the first page was billing: plans based on total store orders, including point-of-sale orders the app did not touch, and charges after the trial. Two reviewers also reported third-party offers appearing in checkout without their approval. On Zipify OCU’s listing, the 1- and 2-star reviews mention upsells that never triggered, slow support and fees seen as high for the revenue earned. Check the billing basis and any offer network setting before you install.
How to build an offer that gets accepted
- Match the first purchase. Offer what the customer needs next, such as a refill after a starter kit.
- Keep the price small, then test. Many guides suggest starting at about a quarter of the order value; A/B test price and discount, and watch acceptance rate (accepted offers divided by views).
- Show one product per step. Use the second step for a cheaper downsell if the first offer is declined. Remember the three-offer limit.
- Exclude what they just bought. Offering the same item they already have in the order wastes the offer slot. In OC this is a setting you choose in the app admin.
Which setup fits your store
- New store, under a few hundred orders a month: start with a free plan and one offer. A flat-fee app keeps costs predictable while you learn what sells.
- Store that sells bundles or multipacks: one app keeps bundle and post-purchase discounts in one place; still check Shopify’s discount combination settings.
- Store where most buyers use wallets or buy now, pay later: expect low offer views. Put more effort into product page bundles and a Thank you page block.
- High-volume store: a funnel app with testing can justify revenue-based fees.

Common problems and fixes
The post-purchase page never appears
Wallets, installment services and gift cards skip the page. Test with a card in a private window and check the app’s targeting rules.
The Post-purchase page section is missing in Settings
Shopify adds it only after a supporting app finishes setup. Finish onboarding, then reload the page.
My second post-purchase app does nothing
Only one app can run the post-purchase page. Whichever app is selected in Settings > Checkout wins. Remove or deselect the other one.
Orders sit unfulfilled for up to an hour
Shopify places a fulfillment hold on orders that reach the post-purchase page, so accepted items can join the same shipment. The hold is released when the customer reaches the Order status page or one hour after checkout. If your 3PL syncs orders instantly, ask it to respect fulfillment holds.
Ads report lower revenue than Shopify
Pixel integrations report the initial purchase only, so the accepted upsell value can be missing in ad platforms. Judge upsell revenue in the app and in Shopify’s order reports. Our checkout apps comparison covers tools that work across checkout pages.
FAQ
Do I need Shopify Plus for a post-purchase upsell?
No. Post-purchase apps work on Basic and higher plans. Per Shopify’s checkout apps guide, Plus is needed only for offers inside the information, shipping and payment steps.
Can I run a post-purchase upsell without an app?
No. Shopify has no built-in post-purchase offer, and checkout.liquid and additional scripts were turned off for the Thank you and Order status pages on August 28, 2025, per Shopify.dev.
Is a post-purchase upsell always one click?
It is designed to be. The page shows only when the card is stored for the order, so the customer accepts without re-entering payment. How the button and confirmation look depends on the app.
Can I offer a subscription after purchase?
Only on orders with a shipping address. Local pickup orders cannot get a subscription added through the post-purchase page.
How do I know if the offer works?
Track offer views, accepted offers and added revenue in the app. Views far below your card orders point to a payment or targeting rule.
Add your first post-purchase offer
Pick one product that fits most orders, set a small discount and test it. Install OC: Volume Discount Bundle App to start on the Free plan with one campaign, and add bundles on the product page when you are ready.
