Price a Shopify product bundle backward from the contribution margin your store needs to keep. Do not simply add the individual product prices and apply a standard 10% or 20% discount.
First, calculate the combined retail value of the products. Then add component COGS and variable costs such as packaging, fulfillment, shipping subsidies, payment fees, gifts, commissions, and expected return losses.
Use this formula to find your price floor:
Minimum bundle price = Fixed variable costs ÷ (1 − percentage-based fees − target contribution margin)
Next, compare that minimum price with the combined retail value:

The result is a discount ceiling based on your assumptions—not the discount you should automatically publish. Keep a buffer for cost changes, discount codes, free shipping, returns, and expensive product combinations.
You should also compare the bundle with what customers would have purchased without it. A bundle can generate a higher average order value while reducing profit if it replaces full-price multi-item orders or lowers store conversion.

Use these five steps:
- Add the normal retail value of every product in the bundle.
- Add all component and order-level variable costs.
- Choose the minimum contribution margin your store must keep.
- Calculate the minimum safe selling price.
- Publish a price above that floor and test the final checkout price.

Minimum bundle price = $75.81
The calculated maximum discount is 24.19%. However, publishing a 24.19% discount would leave almost no safety buffer. A smaller discount, such as 10% or 15%, may be safer.
Why a Higher Bundle AOV Can Still Reduce Profit
Bundles are often used to increase average order value. However, AOV measures revenue per completed order. It does not show how much money remains after the order’s variable costs.
A bundle can raise AOV while reducing profit because of:
- A discount that is too large
- Free shipping
- More expensive packaging
- Higher pick-and-pack costs
- Payment processing fees
- A free gift
- Discount stacking
- More returns or partial returns
- Lower conversion
- Lost full-price product sales

Gross Margin vs Contribution Margin
Gross margin normally considers product revenue and COGS:
Gross profit = Net product sales − COGS
Gross margin = Gross profit ÷ Net product sales
Contribution goes further. It subtracts the variable costs required to complete the order:
Contribution per order = Realized merchandise revenue − COGS − packaging − fulfillment − shipping subsidy − payment fees − other variable costs − expected return loss
For example, a bundle may have:
- Selling price: $85
- Product COGS: $38
- Gross profit: $47
- Gross margin: 55.3%
That looks strong until you include:
- Payment fees: $2.55
- Packaging and fulfillment: $4
- Shipping subsidy: $4
- Expected return loss: $1
The contribution becomes $35.45, or 41.7% of the bundle price.
Gross margin is useful, but contribution margin gives you a more complete bundle-pricing floor.
Contribution per Order vs Contribution per Session
A profitable bundle order can still hurt store-level performance if the offer makes fewer visitors buy.
Use:

However, imagine that many customers already buy all the bundle components separately and generate $44 in contribution. Moving those customers to a $35 bundle loses $9 per converted order.
Compare the bundle with:
- What the average customer normally buys
- What full-price multi-item customers normally buy
- What the same store traffic produces without the bundle
The bundle should create incremental contribution, not simply move existing revenue into a discounted offer.
What Costs Should Be Included in a Product Bundle?
A bundle-cost worksheet should include every material cost that changes when the bundle sells.
Component COGS
For each component, record:
- Product or variant
- Quantity included
- Current unit cost
- Inbound freight
- Import duties
- Product preparation
- Labels or required inserts
Calculate:
Component COGS = Unit cost × Quantity
Then add the component costs:
Total bundle COGS = Sum of all component COGS
Use current landed costs where possible. An outdated cost can make a discount appear safer than it is.
Packaging, Pick-and-Pack, and Shipping

Partial returns can make bundle economics difficult. Customers may keep the most desirable component and return another item that has little resale value.
Use historical return data when available instead of choosing a random percentage.

You can handle customer acquisition cost in either of two ways:
- Calculate contribution before marketing and compare CAC separately by channel.
- Add allocated CAC as a separate layer when the bundle is created for a specific paid campaign.

The Shopify Bundle Pricing Formula
The formula helps you calculate a price floor before choosing the public bundle price.
Step 1: Add Standalone Retail Value
Calculate the value customers would pay if they purchased every component separately:

Then:
Combined standalone retail value = Sum of component standalone values
Use real prices that customers normally pay. Do not create an inflated comparison price that is rarely used.
The standalone value gives you the discount anchor, but it does not show how low the bundle price can safely go.
Step 2: Add Fixed Variable Costs
Define C as the total fixed variable cost of one bundle.
It can include:
- Component COGS
- Packaging
- Pick-and-pack
- Fixed payment fees
- Fixed shipping subsidy
- Return reserve
- Fixed commissions
- Gift costs
Keep percentage-based costs separate.
Step 3: Choose a Target Margin Floor
The target contribution margin should come from your store’s economics.
Review:
- Current contribution margin
- Contribution per normal order
- Operating costs that contribution must cover
- Customer acquisition costs
- Category return rates
- Repeat-purchase behavior
- Campaign objective
- Inventory risk
There is no universal good margin for every Shopify bundle.
A clearance bundle may accept a lower contribution margin to recover inventory value. A bestseller bundle may need a higher margin because customers would purchase the products without a discount.
Step 4: Calculate the Minimum Bundle Price
Define:

Use:

The formula only works when f + m is less than 1.
If you are not including any percentage-based fees, set f to zero.
The result is a price floor based on the costs and target entered. It is not automatically the best customer-facing price.
Step 5: Calculate the Maximum Safe Discount
Define:

Use:
Maximum safe discount = 1 − (Pmin ÷ S)
If the standalone value is $100 and the minimum price is $75.81:
1 − (75.81 ÷ 100) = 24.19%
A discount larger than 24.19% would go below the selected margin floor under the current assumptions.
Do not automatically publish the maximum. Keep a buffer for:
- Cost increases
- Unexpected shipping
- Return losses
- Discount combinations
- Incorrect cost data
- Expensive customer selections
- Campaign commissions
The price paid at checkout after every eligible discount is the number that must stay above the floor.

This means the bundle must stay above $75.81 under the stated assumptions. It does not mean a 24.19% public discount is recommended.

However, the 20% discount has less room for another promotion, unexpected shipping, or higher return costs. The best price depends on the conversion lift, bundle take rate, and incremental contribution created by each offer.
Discount-Stack Stress Test
Suppose the $85 bundle can also receive a 10% order discount.
Realized revenue = $85 × 0.90 = $76.50
Now calculate contribution:
Contribution = 76.50 − 47 − (0.03 × 76.50)
Contribution = $27.21
Then calculate the contribution margin:
Contribution margin = 27.21 ÷ 76.50
Contribution margin = 35.6%
The order narrowly remains above the 35% target. A small unmodeled shipping or return cost could push it below the floor.
This is why you must test the exact cart and checkout—not only the price shown in the bundle widget.
How Much Should You Discount a Product Bundle?
There is no universal safe bundle discount.
You may see 5%–20% used as a general testing range. Treat that range as a reference, not a pricing rule.
A safe discount depends on:
- Product COGS
- Variable fees
- Shipping
- Fulfillment
- Return risk
- Customer acquisition cost
- Bundle objective
- Product demand
- Other eligible promotions
- The margin floor your store needs
Use the smallest incentive that makes the bundle valuable to the customer.
When No Discount Is Needed

A free gift can have a lower cost than a large percentage discount while offering high perceived value.
For example, compare:
- 15% off a $100 bundle: $15 revenue reduction
- Free gift with $4 COGS and $1 handling: approximately $5 variable cost
The gift may protect more contribution if it does not create significant shipping or return costs.
Include the gift’s:
- COGS
- Handling cost
- Packaging space

“Free” only describes what the customer pays. It is still a real cost to the merchant.

The worst valid combination should not go below your hard margin floor unless you have intentionally accepted that result.
BOGO and Free Gifts
Price BOGO offers using the cost of both products.
For “buy one, get one free,” include:
- COGS of the paid item
- COGS of the reward
- Handling for both products
- Larger packaging
- Shipping changes
- Expected returns
A buy-one-get-one-50%-off offer may be safer than a free second item when both products have high COGS.
Gift and Clearance Bundles
Gift bundles can support little or no discount when packaging, curation, and convenience create value.
Clearance bundles have a different objective. They may accept a lower margin to recover cash or reduce storage costs.
Do not use a clearance objective to hide an unattractive combination. Unrelated products can increase returns and reduce customer trust even when the price is low.
